The Fairhive caretakers and Community Engagement Officer were out in force last week as they planted a dozen apple, greengage and plum trees at Bearbrook Orchard in Aylesbury, while also giving a group of Year 1 children a masterclass on planting and gardening.

Under the direction of Gardener Dave Furze, the five and six-year-olds from nearby Bearbrook Combined School listened attentively as they were told the trees would flourish as long as they looked after them. Dave, supported on the day by Kerry Nicholson our Neighbourhood Manager, taught the school children about the basics of gardening and plant care.Caretaker carrying a new tree ready to be planted at the Bearbrook Orchard

The project is a combined effort of Fairhive Homes, Community Transform, Community Grow, Buckinghamshire Council, Aylesbury Garden Town and Bearbrook Combined School. Iva Abbey, Fairhive Community Engagement Officer, said "The hope is by involving the children from a young age they will grow up looking after the orchard and share their pride of being part of such an important project with their families, so all can become involved in the care and growth of Bearbrook Orchard."

She added: “It was wonderful to see so much interest in the tree planting – it literally sows the seeds of them caring for the environment, their community and the natural world. I want to thank all the groups involved for their commitment to this valuable project.”
