Our move to electric!
The ownership of electric vehicles is increasing substantially and the Government has made clear its commitment to ban petrol and diesel new car sales from 2030, as well as legislating to ensure that new building regulations will require developers to provide electric vehicle charging points.
We’ve been getting ahead of the game by installing electric vehicle charging points on new housing developments over the last two years, wherever this is feasible.
Julie Porter, Executive Director of Development at Fairhive said ‘We’re committed to delivering high quality sustainable new homes and providing our residents with the ability to charge an electric vehicle is a key part of our overall strategy. As we move towards a zero carbon future, electric vehicles are becoming the norm and provision of charging points hopefully makes the decision to switch to electric an easier one for our residents’.
We were also an early adopter of electric vehicles within our service fleet, and have had electric cars available for employee travel for a number of years. We are now expanding our fleet with a second electric van under trial and plans to increase the number of charging points at our Head Office based in Aylesbury.
Across 2020-21 our electric cars completed nearly 4,000 miles and for 2021-22 up to 8,100 miles which is over 12,000 electric miles in total. We’ve been able to reach residents for calls or repairs whilst emitting far fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants.
Peter Gerity, Materials and Fleet Manager at Fairhive added, “We are currently working to increase the charging points at our office which will allow our vehicles to be charged efficiently. With the fleet of electric cars we currently have, this year so far we’ve managed to total 13,138 electric miles. This means overall the saving on business miles taken out by our staff since 2020, over petrol and diesel vehicles is £5,912.”
We are keen to celebrate our successes so far and to push forward in our commitment to low emission travel. Not only are we aiming to achieve a cleaner town and greener environment, we wish to make business savings wherever possible. Keep an eye out on our News and Environment page for further updates.
